Sissu in October: Weather, Autumn & Travel Tips

By the hosts at Hotel Lake Side Inn, Sissu · Updated 3 July 2026

Sissu in October is the valley at its clearest and most golden — crisp, dry, blue-sky days of roughly 8–16°C, sharply cold nights, and the poplars and willows turning autumn gold. With the monsoon gone and deep winter not yet arrived, October is the last comfortable pre-winter window to visit. Early October is settled and easy; by the end of the month the first snowfalls of the season become possible.

Quick answer: what is Sissu like in October?

October is, for many locals, the loveliest month to see Sissu. Once the monsoon clears the air in late September, the Lahaul valley settles into a run of dry, brilliantly clear days with visibility that stretches to every ridgeline. Sitting at about 3,100 m (10,170 ft) on the valley floor, Sissu turns gold as the deciduous trees change, the light goes crisp and low, and the first fresh snow of the coming winter starts to dust the high peaks.

It is also the last easy window before winter. Days are still comfortable, roads are open via the Atal Tunnel, and the summer crowds have thinned — but nights are cold and the weather turns quickly as November approaches. If you want clear skies, autumn colour and a peaceful valley, October delivers. For how it compares month to month, see our best time to visit Sissu and Sissu weather month by month guides.

Weather in October

October weather in Sissu is defined by dryness and clarity. Daytime highs typically sit in the 8–16°C range, and in the strong autumn sun a sheltered spot feels pleasantly warm. The real change from summer is the nights: they turn sharply cold, commonly 0–6°C, dipping close to freezing by late October. The humidity is low, the air is thin and clean, and the skies are the clearest you’ll see all year — which is exactly why photographers love this month.

The month has two distinct halves. Early October is stable, mild and reliably dry — the safest bet for comfortable travel. From mid-to-late October the cold deepens and the first weather systems of winter can arrive, bringing cloud and the season’s first snowfall. Treat the figures below as a guide, not a forecast.

Part of OctoberDay / night temperatureSnow & road
Early October~12–16°C day; ~4–6°C nightDry, clear, settled; roads fully open; the safest window
Mid October~10–14°C day; ~2–5°C nightCooling; peaks getting fresh snow; roads open
Late October~8–12°C day; ~0–3°C nightFirst village snow possible; occasional clearance delay after a fall

The practical message: October days are made for being outdoors, but the nights bite. Come prepared for genuine cold after dark, and expect conditions to tighten as the month runs on.

Autumn colour & the first snow

October is when Lahaul shows its autumn face. The poplars, willows and orchard trees along the valley floor turn yellow and gold, and against the grey-brown mountain slopes and the first white on the summits, the colour is striking. Combined with the low, warm autumn light and the year’s clearest air, it makes for some of the most rewarding photography of the whole calendar — see our photography & stargazing guide, as October’s dark, cloudless nights are also excellent for stars.

The other headline is the return of snow. Through October, fresh snow steadily builds on the high peaks around Sissu, and by the last week of the month a light dusting can reach the village itself — the season’s first. It’s a possibility rather than a promise, so don’t plan a trip around guaranteed snow in October; for that, look to December and the deep-winter months. What October reliably offers is that lovely transitional scene: a golden valley below, freshly whitened peaks above. The Sissu Waterfall and streams run lower now than in summer, as the melt has eased.

Things to do in October

October’s clear, dry days are ideal for gentle exploring before the cold shuts things down. Good ways to spend your time include:

For the full year-round list, see our things to do in Sissu guide. Note that as the cold deepens, water-based and high-energy activities wind down for the season.

Roads & the pre-winter window

October is the last straightforward month to reach Sissu before winter tightens its hold. Thanks to the Atal Tunnel — which runs under the mountain rather than over the old Rohtang route — the Manali–Sissu road (around 38–40 km, roughly 1–1.5 hours, with the north portal just ~12 km from the village) stays open and, for most of October, easy.

The caveat is late October. Once the first snowfalls arrive, you can get occasional clearance delays, and the window to travel comfortably narrows. If you’re coming late in the month, keep your plans flexible and check conditions before you leave — our is Sissu open right now page and Atal Tunnel timings & rules guide are the quickest way to do that. Also note there is no petrol pump in Sissu, so fuel up in Manali before crossing; the next pump toward Keylong is at Tandi, about 22 km on.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is October a good time to visit Sissu?

Yes — for clear skies and autumn scenery it is one of the best. October brings dry, brilliantly clear days of around 8–16°C, a golden valley, and the year’s finest visibility, all before deep winter arrives. The trade-offs are sharply cold nights and, late in the month, the chance of the first snow and a road-clearance delay.

How cold is Sissu in October?

Days are crisp and pleasant, roughly 8–16°C and warmer in direct sun. Nights turn cold, commonly 0–6°C and dipping close to freezing late in the month. The dry autumn air makes the daytime feel comfortable, but you will need a proper warm jacket after dark.

Does it snow in Sissu in October?

Fresh snow builds on the high peaks through October, and by the last week of the month a light dusting can reach the village itself — the season’s first snow. It is a possibility, not a guarantee, so don’t plan around certain snow in October; for reliable snow underfoot, visit in December or later.

Are the roads to Sissu open in October?

Yes, for most of the month. The Atal Tunnel keeps the Manali–Sissu road open and, through early and mid-October, easy. Late October can bring occasional clearance delays after the first snowfalls, so if you travel late in the month, keep plans flexible and check conditions the day before.

Is October crowded in Sissu?

No — the summer crowds have thinned by October, leaving a peaceful valley. It is a lovely time for quiet walks and unhurried photography. Booking ahead is still worthwhile so your hosts can prepare a warm, heated room for the cold nights.

What should I pack for Sissu in October?

Pack warm-weighted layers: a proper warm jacket, a fleece or sweater, base layers, and a woollen cap, gloves and thick socks for the cold nights. Add comfortable walking shoes (waterproof if travelling late in the month), strong sun protection, and lip balm for the dry autumn air.
