Sissu in March: Snow, Reopening & Early Spring

By the hosts at Hotel Lake Side Inn, Sissu · Updated 9 July 2026

March is the transition from deep winter to early spring in Sissu — still cold, with lingering snow early in the month, the Lahaul valley slowly reopening to visitors, and the whole place far quieter than peak season. Early March can still sit in the tail of the winter-tourism suspension, so access is the one thing to confirm before you set off; by mid-to-late March the valley is generally waking up, the snow starts to melt on the valley floor and the first hints of spring arrive. It is a beautiful, in-between month — and we’re happy to tell you honestly what your exact dates look like.

March weather & temperature

March is the month Sissu begins to thaw. Sitting at about 3,100 m (10,170 ft) on the Lahaul valley floor, the village spends the first half of the month still firmly in winter’s grip, then slides gently toward early spring as it runs on. Daytime highs climb from around 4–7°C in early March toward a milder 8–12°C by the end of the month on the sunnier days. Nights, though, stay cold throughout — expect lows of roughly −5 to −2°C early on, easing toward 0 to 2°C by late March. It is a month of two halves.

What defines March is the thaw. The hard, settled snow of January and February starts to soften and retreat on the valley floor, leaving a mix of firm snow, slush and the first patches of bare, wet ground. The surrounding Pir Panjal peaks stay brilliantly white well into spring, so you get the striking combination of snowy mountains above and a valley slowly turning. Clear, windless March days can feel almost warm in direct sun; but fresh late-winter snowfall and cold snaps are still very much on the cards, especially in the first fortnight. Treat the figures below as a rough guide, not a forecast.

Part of MarchDay / night temperatureSnow & conditions
Early March~4–7°C day; ~−5 to −2°C nightStill wintry; settled snow on the valley floor, fresh spells possible
Mid March~6–10°C day; ~−3 to 0°C nightThawing; softening snow, slush and first bare patches
Late March~8–12°C day; ~0 to 2°C nightEarly spring feel; snow retreating, peaks still white

The practical takeaway: March gives you snow scenery without the deepest cold of midwinter, but the nights are still firmly below or near freezing and the weather is genuinely changeable. Come prepared for both winter and the first breath of spring. For how it compares across the year, see our month-by-month Sissu weather guide, and for the wider view our best time to visit Sissu page.

Snow in March

March is the classic tail end of the snow season in Sissu, which makes it a favourite for travellers who want the white landscape without the brutal cold of January. In early March the valley floor usually still holds a real, settled snow cover — the fields, rooftops and riverbanks stay white, and late-winter snowfalls can still lay down fresh powder. This is genuine valley-floor snow, provided you can get in and the roads are clear.

As the month goes on the story shifts. By mid-to-late March the stronger sun starts to melt the snow on the valley floor, leaving a patchy mix of firm snow, slush and emerging ground, while the higher slopes and the Pir Panjal peaks stay dependably white. So if deep, unbroken snow is what you are chasing, aim for the first half of the month; if you would rather have milder days with snow still on the mountains and just enough on the ground for photos, the second half suits you better. Either way, this is wild, quiet mountain snow — there is no ski resort here. Our Sissu snowfall guide and Sissu in winter pages explain how the season builds and fades, and our Sissu snow point note covers where the snow lingers longest.

Is Sissu open in March?

This is the single most important thing to check before a March trip, so we will be straight with you. The Lahaul winter-tourism season is sometimes officially suspended for roughly 40 days, usually running from late January to around the end of February for snow-safety reasons and the local Halda festival — and in some years the tail of that suspension can spill into the very start of March. The exact dates shift year to year and are decided locally, so early-March dates are the ones to confirm.

The good news is that the valley generally reopens through March: the Atal Tunnel stays open across most of winter, and as the suspension lifts, visitors start coming up again for the late-season snow. By mid-to-late March, Sissu is typically open and waking from its winter break. But because the reopening date is not fixed, if your dates fall in the first week or two of March, please call or WhatsApp us on +91 82193 15303 before you book and we will tell you honestly whether the road and the hotel are open for your exact days. For the live position on closures and road status, keep an eye on our is Sissu open right now page. We would always rather you shift by a week than arrive to a closed valley.

Things to do in March

March is not a month of packed itineraries — the lingering snow and the thaw keep things simple and scenic. When the valley is open and the weather cooperates, the best ways to spend your time are:

What March is not good for is the high routes — passes toward Chandratal and beyond remain firmly closed for winter well into summer, and the big adventure-activity season has not yet started. March is a month for late snow, quiet walks and warmth, not for ticking off far-flung sights.

Getting there & road conditions

Reaching Sissu in March depends on the weather and the reopening status, but for much of the month it is straightforward. Thanks to the Atal Tunnel — which runs under the mountain rather than over the old Rohtang route — the Manali–Sissu drive is around 38–40 km and takes roughly 1–1.5 hours, with the tunnel’s north portal about 12 km from the village on the Lahaul side. The tunnel is engineered to stay open through winter, so the crossing itself is usually fine.

The roads on either side are a different matter, especially in early March: fresh snow, slush, black ice in the mornings and short clearance holds are all still common after a late-winter fall. Conditions ease as the month warms and the snow retreats, so late March is the more reliable window. If you drive up yourself, treat it seriously — good tyres, an early start, and never push on in a snowstorm or after dark; many visitors prefer an experienced local driver. Do read our winter driving to Sissu guide and our Atal Tunnel timings & rules page before you set out. Note too that there is no petrol pump in Sissu — fuel up in Manali before you cross, as the next pump toward Keylong is at Tandi. Always call us on +91 82193 15303 the day before to check the latest road and reopening position; our how to reach Sissu guide covers the route in full.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is March a good time to visit Sissu?

March is a good time if you want late-season snow without the deepest cold of midwinter, along with quiet, uncrowded surroundings well before the May–June peak. Early March still feels wintry with settled snow on the valley floor, while mid-to-late March brings milder days as the valley reopens and the thaw sets in. The main thing to confirm is access for early-March dates, as the winter suspension can occasionally spill into the start of the month.

Is there snow in Sissu in March?

Yes, especially early in the month. In early March the valley floor usually still holds a real, settled snow cover, with late-winter snowfalls still possible. By mid-to-late March the stronger sun melts much of the valley-floor snow, leaving patchy snow and slush, though the surrounding peaks stay brilliantly white well into spring. For deep snow, aim for the first half of the month.

Is Sissu open in March?

Generally yes, though early March needs checking. The Lahaul winter-tourism suspension usually runs from roughly late January to around the end of February, and in some years its tail can spill into the very start of March. The valley typically reopens through March as the suspension lifts. If your dates fall in the first week or two of March, call or WhatsApp us on +91 82193 15303 to confirm the road and hotel are open before you book.

How cold is Sissu in March?

Cold but easing. Daytime highs climb from around 4–7°C in early March toward 8–12°C by late in the month on sunny days. Nights stay cold throughout, with lows of roughly −5 to −2°C early on, easing toward 0 to 2°C by late March. You will still want a proper warm jacket and a heated room, particularly in the first half of the month.

Are the roads to Sissu open in March?

Usually yes when the valley is open. The Atal Tunnel keeps the Manali–Sissu drive at around 38–40 km and roughly 1–1.5 hours. But the roads on either side see fresh snow, slush, morning black ice and short clearance holds, especially early in the month, so late March is more reliable. Always call us the day before to check the current road and reopening status.

March or April for Sissu?

Choose March if you want more snow on the valley floor and a quieter, still-wintry feel, and are happy to confirm access for early-month dates. Choose April for milder weather, easier roads and the fuller arrival of spring, with snow retreating to the higher slopes. See our Sissu in April guide to compare, and call us on +91 82193 15303 and we will advise honestly for your exact dates.
