Bhuntar (Kullu) Airport to Sissu: After You Land

By the hosts at Hotel Lake Side Inn, Sissu · Updated 9 July 2026

Bhuntar (Kullu–Manali) airport is about ~90 km from Sissu, roughly a 3 to 3.5-hour drive. You head up to Manali (~50 km) first, then take the final ~38–40 km through the Atal Tunnel — ideally in a pre-arranged taxi. One honest caveat before you book a flight: Bhuntar is a small airport with limited, weather-dependent connectivity, so many travellers instead fly into Chandigarh or Delhi and drive the rest. As the hosts at Hotel Lake Side Inn, we help arriving guests plan exactly this leg all season, and we are happy to line up the car for you.

Bhuntar airport to Sissu at a glance

Bhuntar — officially Kullu–Manali airport (airport code KUU) — sits in the Kullu valley, about 50 km before Manali as you come up the highway. From the terminal to Sissu is roughly 90 km in total and around 3 to 3.5 hours of driving, split into two clear stages: the winding valley run up to Manali (~50 km, ~1.5–2 hrs), and then the smooth final stretch through the Atal Tunnel to Sissu (~38–40 km, ~1–1.5 hrs).

The good news for anyone who does manage to fly in is that Bhuntar is the closest airport to Sissu by road, so it trims a big chunk off the drive compared with landing at Chandigarh or Delhi. The catch is getting a flight to land here reliably — which is the next thing to understand before you book. Treat every distance and time here as approximate; mountain roads vary with traffic, weather and season.

About Bhuntar airport — the honest caveat

We would rather be straight with you than have your trip go sideways at the booking stage. Bhuntar is a small, single-runway airport tucked into a narrow valley. Flight connectivity is limited and highly weather-dependent: the schedule is thin, aircraft are small, and services are regularly delayed or cancelled when cloud, rain or poor visibility settle over the valley — which, in the hills, is often. Fares also tend to run high precisely because options are few.

So while Bhuntar is the nearest airport, it is not always the most dependable way in. For most travellers the safer plan is to fly into a big, all-weather airport — Chandigarh or Delhi — and drive from there. Chandigarh is the popular choice: reliable flights, then a scenic road run up through Mandi and Kullu to Manali and on to Sissu. If you would like the full breakdown of those longer approaches, see our Chandigarh to Sissu and Delhi to Sissu guides.

The short version: if a Bhuntar flight fits your dates and holds up, brilliant — you save hours of road. If it does not, do not force it; a Chandigarh or Delhi landing plus a taxi is the calmer, more predictable route to the valley.

How to get from the airport to Sissu

There is no direct bus, train or flight onward from Bhuntar to Sissu — it is a road journey from here, and you have two sensible ways to do it:

Whichever you choose, we deliberately do not quote fixed fares — taxi rates in the hills move with the season, fuel prices and demand, so any number we printed would be out of date fast. Ask for a current quote when you book, and carry some cash, as card acceptance thins out the higher you go.

The drive via Manali and the Atal Tunnel

The journey falls into two very different halves. The first leg, Bhuntar up to Manali (~50 km), follows the Beas river through the Kullu valley — a busy, built-up highway that can crawl through Kullu and Manali town traffic, which is why it can take 1.5 to 2 hours despite the modest distance. This is the slow, winding part of the day.

The second leg, Manali to Sissu (~38–40 km), is the one people remember. You climb to the tunnel’s south portal above Manali and cross the 9.02 km Atal Tunnel, emerging into the Lahaul valley on the far side — Sissu is about 12 km beyond the north portal. This stretch is quicker and smoother, roughly 1 to 1.5 hours. A few tunnel rules matter: there is a 60 km/h speed limit, and no stopping or photography inside, all camera-enforced, so save your photos for the portals. No permit is needed for Indian travellers — just carry a government photo ID. For the full route and crossing details, see how to reach Sissu and our Atal Tunnel timings & rules guide.

Timing your arrival

Arriving in the mountains is all about daylight, and a flight leg makes timing trickier because departures slip. A few principles keep the day smooth:

  1. Aim to land in the morning or early afternoon. An early arrival at Bhuntar gives you the whole ~3.5-hour drive in daylight, with margin to spare if the flight runs late.
  2. Cross the Atal Tunnel and reach Sissu before dark. Mountain light fades fast, and the Manali climb and tunnel approach are far more comfortable in daylight. Try to be through the tunnel well before dusk.
  3. Build in a buffer. Because Bhuntar flights are weather-prone and can be delayed or diverted, avoid packing your arrival day too tightly. Leave slack rather than a same-evening onward plan.
  4. Tell your driver your real landing time. A pre-booked pick-up can adjust to a delayed flight if they know — give us the flight number so the car is there when you actually land, not before.

If your flight is a late one, or the weather looks marginal, it is often wiser to break the journey with a night in Manali and drive to Sissu fresh the next morning rather than tackling the tunnel road tired and in the dark.

Where to stay & a few last tips

Once you are through the tunnel, the reward is that everything at Sissu is close and calm. The lake and waterfall are a two-minute walk from the hotel, and after a long travel day you will want a warm room and a hot meal waiting rather than a hunt for dinner — the valley’s dining is limited, so an on-site kitchen genuinely matters. Our mountain-view rooms come with 24×7 hot water, room heaters and a 100% pure-veg restaurant, a two-minute stroll from the water. Frequently Asked Questions

How far is Bhuntar airport from Sissu?

About 90 km, and roughly a 3 to 3.5-hour drive. The route runs up to Manali (~50 km, ~1.5–2 hrs) and then through the Atal Tunnel to Sissu (~38–40 km, ~1–1.5 hrs). All distances are approximate and vary with traffic and weather.

Is Bhuntar airport reliable for reaching Sissu?

It is the closest airport, but it is small with limited, weather-dependent flights that are often delayed or cancelled. If a Bhuntar flight fits your dates, it saves hours of driving. If not, most travellers fly into Chandigarh or Delhi and drive up, which is more dependable.

How do I get from Bhuntar airport to Sissu?

It is a road journey. The easiest option is a pre-booked private taxi that drives you straight through in one go — we can arrange this if you share your flight details. The budget alternative is a bus or shared cab to Manali, then an onward bus or taxi through the Atal Tunnel to Sissu.

Should I fly to Bhuntar, Chandigarh or Delhi for Sissu?

Bhuntar is nearest (~90 km) but has thin, weather-prone connectivity. Chandigarh is the popular reliable choice — dependable flights, then a scenic drive up. Delhi works too, with the most flight options but the longest road leg. See our Chandigarh to Sissu and Delhi to Sissu guides for those routes.

How long does the drive from Bhuntar to Sissu take?

Roughly 3 to 3.5 hours in normal conditions. The Kullu-valley stretch up to Manali is the slower half (busy highway, ~1.5–2 hrs), while the Atal Tunnel leg to Sissu is quicker and smoother (~1–1.5 hrs).

Is there fuel between Bhuntar and Sissu?

Yes along the way, but crucially there is no petrol pump in Sissu itself — the next pump beyond the village is at Tandi, past Keylong. If you are self-driving, fill up in Manali before you cross the Atal Tunnel.
