Sissu is about 570 km from Delhi, and the realistic way to do it is in two legs: an overnight Volvo or bus from Delhi to Manali (roughly 12–14 hours), then a short 1–1.5 hour drive from Manali to Sissu through the Atal Tunnel. There is no direct train or flight to Sissu — the nearest railheads are at Chandigarh and Ambala, and the nearest airport is Bhuntar (Kullu), about 90 km away. Plan on the better part of a day and a night to reach us, and we’ll have a warm room waiting on the Lahaul valley floor.
How far is Sissu from Delhi?
By road it is roughly 570 km from Delhi to Sissu, following the standard Delhi–Chandigarh–Bilaspur–Mandi–Kullu–Manali highway and then crossing into the Lahaul valley through the Atal Tunnel. That figure sounds manageable until you remember what the last third of it is: a slow, winding mountain climb where your average speed drops to a crawl. This is why nobody sensible thinks of Delhi to Sissu as a single sprint.
The honest way to picture the journey is in two very different halves. The Delhi–Manali stretch (~530 km) is mostly expressway and national highway — long, but fast and comfortable, and easily done overnight while you sleep. The Manali–Sissu stretch is only ~38–40 km, yet it is the memorable part: up out of Manali, through the 9.02 km Atal Tunnel beneath the Rohtang range, and out into a completely different, treeless high-mountain world on the Lahaul side. Sissu sits at about 3,100 m on the valley floor, so you gain serious altitude on that final short leg.

The realistic plan: overnight bus, then the tunnel
After hosting travellers who arrive from Delhi almost daily, here is the plan we’d recommend to a friend. Take an overnight Volvo or bus from Delhi to Manali, boarding in the evening (most services leave between roughly 5 and 9 pm from Kashmere Gate ISBT, Majnu ka Tila or RK Ashram). You sleep through the long highway miles and reach Manali in the morning after 12–14 hours. Freshen up, grab breakfast, and then cover the last leg by taxi or shared cab from Manali to Sissu — about 1 to 1.5 hours through the Atal Tunnel.
Done this way, you lose almost no daytime to travel: the boring miles happen while you’re asleep, and you arrive in Sissu with the whole afternoon free for the lake and waterfall. It also breaks the altitude gain sensibly — a night at Manali’s ~2,000 m before climbing to Sissu’s 3,100 m is gentler on your body than doing it all in one go. For the taxi and shared-cab fares on that final leg, we keep a detailed, honest breakdown on our Manali to Sissu taxi & bus fare page.
If you’re building a full trip around this, our Sissu itinerary from Manali shows how to slot the arrival into a two- or three-day plan.
Every option compared
There is no single “right” way — it depends on your budget, how much you enjoy driving, and how much time you have. Here is the honest comparison:
| Mode | Approx time (Delhi → Sissu) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Bus + taxi (recommended) | ~14–16 hrs | Overnight Volvo to Manali, then a cab through the tunnel. Cheapest comfortable option; you sleep through the miles. |
| Self-drive | ~14–18 hrs | Total freedom, but a tiring mountain drive. Best split over two days with a Manali overnight. |
| Train + road | ~16–20 hrs | Train to Chandigarh/Ambala, then bus or taxi up. Only worth it if a good train suits your schedule. |
| Flight + taxi | ~5–7 hrs (if flight is on time) | Fly Delhi → Bhuntar (Kullu), then ~90 km / 3–4 hr taxi. Fastest but flights are pricey, few and weather-dependent. |
| Private taxi door to door | ~13–16 hrs | Most comfortable, most expensive. A driver takes you the whole way; worth it for families or groups. |
By bus — the popular choice
The bus is how most independent travellers reach us, and for good reason: it is affordable, frequent, and the overnight timing works beautifully. HRTC (Himachal Road Transport) and a range of private operators run Volvo AC coaches and ordinary buses from Delhi to Manali every evening. There is no direct bus from Delhi all the way to Sissu — you change at Manali.
- Where to board: Kashmere Gate ISBT for HRTC and many private services; Majnu ka Tila and RK Ashram Marg for a lot of the private Volvos.
- When: Most depart between about 5 pm and 9 pm and arrive in Manali the next morning — roughly a 12–14 hour ride.
- Onward to Sissu: From Manali, take a taxi or a shared cab through the tunnel (~1–1.5 hrs). In summer some HRTC buses also run from Manali toward Keylong and pass Sissu — confirm timings locally, as they’re seasonal.
Book your Delhi–Manali seat a few days ahead in peak season (May–June and around long weekends), when coaches fill fast. Tell us your arrival window when you get in touch and we can help you line up the onward cab from Manali.
By train — via Chandigarh or Ambala
There is no railway line to Sissu, Manali or anywhere in Lahaul — the mountains simply don’t allow it. If you prefer to start by rail, the practical nearest railheads are Chandigarh and Ambala Cantt, both well connected to Delhi by fast trains including Shatabdi services (roughly 3–4 hours to Chandigarh).
From either station you still have the full mountain journey ahead: a bus or taxi onward to Manali (about 8–10 hours from Chandigarh), and then the final tunnel leg to Sissu. In practice, the train only makes sense if a convenient daytime train fits your plans and you’d rather split the trip — otherwise the direct overnight Delhi–Manali bus is simpler and often quicker overall. Kalka’s famous toy train to Shimla is a lovely ride but takes you the wrong way for Lahaul.
By air — Bhuntar (Kullu)
The nearest airport to Sissu is Bhuntar (Kullu–Manali) Airport, roughly 90 km away and about a 3–4 hour drive via Manali and the Atal Tunnel. A few flights connect Delhi to Bhuntar, but be realistic about them: the airstrip is small, flights are limited and expensive, and mountain weather causes frequent delays and cancellations.
If a flight works out and runs on time, it is by far the fastest way — you could be in Sissu the same afternoon. But we’d never advise it as your only plan; keep the overnight bus as a fallback. From Bhuntar, arrange a taxi onward through Manali and the tunnel. Our how to reach Sissu guide covers the airport option in more detail.
Self-driving from Delhi
Driving your own car from Delhi to Sissu is hugely rewarding and gives you total flexibility once you’re in the valley — but respect the distance. The sensible way is to split it over two days with an overnight in Manali (or Mandi), rather than attempting ~570 km of increasingly difficult road in one shot.
- Route: Delhi → Chandigarh (expressway) → Bilaspur → Mandi → Kullu → Manali → Atal Tunnel → Sissu.
- Fuel: Fill up in Manali — there is no petrol pump in Sissu, and the next one toward Keylong is at Tandi. Don’t leave Manali low.
- The tunnel: The Atal Tunnel is free, has a 60 km/h limit, and allows no stopping or photography inside — take your photos at the portals.
- Parking: We offer free on-site parking at the hotel, so your car is safe once you arrive.
- Season: Check conditions before winter trips — the tunnel keeps Sissu reachable most of the year, but snow can briefly close the road.
Once you cross the tunnel, the last 12 km along the valley floor to Sissu are straightforward. Message us your ETA and we’ll guide your car in. Ready to settle the dates? See our mountain-view rooms and contact us to book direct.
Frequently Asked Questions
How far is Sissu from Delhi?
Sissu is about 570 km from Delhi by road, via Chandigarh, Mandi, Kullu, Manali and the Atal Tunnel. Because the final stretch is slow mountain driving, plan on roughly 14–18 hours door to door — which is why most travellers split it with an overnight leg to Manali.
Is there a direct bus from Delhi to Sissu?
No. There is no direct Delhi–Sissu bus. Take an overnight Volvo or ordinary bus from Delhi to Manali (12–14 hrs), then a taxi or shared cab from Manali to Sissu through the Atal Tunnel (~1–1.5 hrs). In summer a few Manali–Keylong buses pass Sissu.
What is the nearest railway station to Sissu?
There is no railway in Lahaul. The nearest practical railheads are Chandigarh and Ambala Cantt, both fast trains from Delhi. From there it is still a bus or taxi to Manali and then the tunnel leg to Sissu, so the direct Delhi–Manali bus is often simpler.
What is the nearest airport to Sissu?
The nearest airport is Bhuntar (Kullu–Manali), about 90 km from Sissu — roughly a 3–4 hour drive via Manali and the Atal Tunnel. Flights from Delhi are limited, pricey and weather-dependent, so keep an overnight bus as a backup plan.
Can I do Delhi to Sissu in one day?
Only if you fly and the flight runs on time, or drive very long hours. By bus or car the ~570 km is realistically a 14–18 hour journey, so most people travel overnight or split it with a Manali stop. Trying to do it all in one daytime push leaves you exhausted at 3,100 m.
Do I need a permit to visit Sissu?
No. Indian travellers need no permit for Sissu — just carry a valid government photo ID. Foreign nationals follow standard rules; no special inner-line permit is needed for Sissu itself. Permits only come into play deeper into restricted border areas of Lahaul–Spiti.
Is the road from Delhi to Sissu open in winter?
The Atal Tunnel keeps Sissu reachable through most of the year, including much of winter, which the old Rohtang route never allowed. However, heavy snow (roughly December–February) can briefly close the road or restrict tourist movement. Message us to confirm conditions before a winter trip.
